PERSONAL EXPERIENCE · COMMUNITY BUILDING

Instagram &
community building.

Ratmir Klevtsov’s experience with Instagram began in 2016, initially as a way to socialize, share posts and stories, and connect with other people. Over time, his understanding of the platform evolved. What started as a social outlet would eventually become an opportunity to build communities, develop a personal brand, and experiment with short-form content.

THE BEGINNING2016

The beginning

Ratmir created his first Instagram account in 2016. At the time, his interest in the platform was primarily social. He viewed his profile as a kind of digital business card, initially thinking of it as a way to present himself and make connections.

As he spent more time on the platform, he began to recognize a broader purpose for Instagram. Beyond personal interactions, it could serve as a public representation of an individual or brand, while allowing businesses to connect with their audiences in a more personal and approachable way.

This understanding would later influence his own experiments with community building and content creation.

BUILDING A COMMUNITY2020–21

Building a community

In 2020, Ratmir launched an Instagram community page built around a YouTube channel that was performing well at the time. The goal was to extend the channel’s reach beyond YouTube and give its audience a place to interact with one another.

Over time, the Instagram page grew to more than 4,000 active followers. The community subsequently expanded onto Discord, where the server also developed a membership of approximately 4,000 active members before its eventual shutdown.

However, maintaining the community became increasingly challenging as Ratmir simultaneously managed the Discord server, two YouTube channels, and an Instagram theme page.

Looking back, Ratmir attributes the server’s eventual destruction partly to his own inexperience with community management. While juggling these responsibilities, he granted moderator permissions to someone without sufficiently verifying their suitability for the role. That individual subsequently destroyed the server, bringing the community to an abrupt end.

Rather than concealing the incident, Ratmir considers it an example of the management mistakes he made while learning to operate online communities. Following the incident, he stepped away from community building and Instagram growth for a period. The theme page remained active until 2021, after which he abandoned the project.

THE RATMIR GUY ERA2022–23

The Ratmir Guy era

In 2022, Ratmir returned to Instagram with a different approach, launching a fitness-focused personal brand under the alias Ratmir Guy.

Instead of building a theme page around an existing YouTube audience, he began producing and publishing original fitness content, primarily in the form of Instagram Reels.

The response was immediate. His first videos began attracting tens of thousands of views, and within a relatively short period, his content reached hundreds of thousands of views, with some videos surpassing one million.

During this period, his now-deleted YouTube channel also experienced growth, extending his fitness content beyond Instagram.

The project demonstrated another side of Ratmir’s approach to content creation: experimenting with a new niche, building a recognizable online identity, and using short-form video to reach audiences beyond his existing communities.

However, the Ratmir Guy project was ultimately discontinued in 2023, when Ratmir abandoned the Instagram account. Although the account was eventually left behind, the experience added another chapter to his broader journey through social media, personal branding, and online content creation.

LOOKING BACKTHEN & NOW

Looking back

From creating an Instagram account for personal use in 2016 to building communities of thousands of people and experimenting with a fitness-focused personal brand, Ratmir’s experience with the platform evolved alongside his understanding of online audiences.

These projects exposed him to different aspects of social media, including audience engagement, community management, personal branding, and short-form content distribution.

Each project had a different purpose, and not all of them lasted. Together, however, they formed part of his broader experience in developing and managing an online presence.
